How to Give Your Furniture an Antiqued Look

There is nothing I love more than antiqued furniture.  It's a really popular look right now that gives homes a classy vintage look.  Recently I decided it was time to change the color of my outdated furniture in my family room to give it a more antique look to match the style now days.  When researching how to complete the project I discovered 3 different ways to antique furniture.  They are very easy & straightforward.  I tried each of the 3 methods and found that each approach had its own perks.  I'll let you decide which method you like the best.

Paint, Distress, than Stain

This process is completed by performing the basic painting process.  Paint your piece of furniture, let it dry completely and then use some kind of sander to sand the edges of it.  Once you have the entire piece of furniture sanded exactly how you want it, go over the parts that have wood  exposed with a cotton rag and wood stain.  Rub off any excess stain before it dries quickly.

Paint & Use Dark Wax

If you are using chalk paint to antique your furniture a very popular and easy way to complete this process is by first painting your piece of furniture with chalk paint.  Let your furniture dry & then rub a dark tinted wax over the entire piece.  Wipe away the excess so that only the dark wax shows in the corners & crevices.  Once your dark wax is complete you will need to do a clear wax coat to finish your piece.

Paint & Glaze

Another popular way to antique furniture is by painting & glazing your piece.  This is done by mixing 1/2 dark paint to 1/2 glaze and a couple drops of water.  You then apply the glaze mixture on your furniture and wipe away any excess paint.  Be sure to work quickly as the glaze mixture dries very fast.

Antiquing furniture is a lot of fun.  It can transform a boring dull house into a work of art.  By following my steps above you can antique your furniture like a pro.
